Description
Ignored, and then forgotten. Given the role that Ruusan played in reshaping the galaxy, its trivial profile is wildly at odds with its historic significance.
On Ruusan, clear mountain rivers once crisscrossed old-growth forests. The gentle, spherical Bouncers lived there, communicating telepathically and traveling on the winds. In 2200 BBY the Mining Guild claimed Ruusan and other ore-rich planets in the Teraab sector, but Ruusan’s mineral deposits proved disappointing. By 1000 BBY the planet’s only remaining settlers were a handful of optimistic claim jumpers and those seeking refuge from creditors and bounty hunters.
In that year the Sith of the Brotherhood of Darkness made their last stand on Ruusan, drawing the Jedi Army of Light into seven brutal ground battles that left both sides decimated and Ruusan stripped of vegetation. Ultimately, the Sith Lord Kaan wiped out both sides by drawing their life essences into the vacuum of a Sith "thought bomb." Darth Bane escaped the battle and forever changed Sith traditions by instituting the Rule of Two.
A Jedi Knight honored his fallen comrades by petitioning the Senate to build a mausoleum on the site of the tragedy, which became known as the Valley of the Jedi. Supreme Chancellor Russa Valorum marked the end of the New Sith Wars by announcing a complete governmental restructuring under the banner of the Ruusan Reformations.
Though its name persisted, few visited the planet itself. Even the Valley of the Jedi dropped off official records once expanding nebulae in the Teraab sector erased the hyperlanes leading to Ruusan. The Separatists established a spy post above the planet during the Clone Wars, but it was quickly destroyed and Ruusan returned to obscurity.
Ten years before the Battle of Yavin, a band of smugglers stumbled on Ruusan, constructing their "Fort Nowhere" outpost not far from the ancient ruins of Olmondo. Fort Nowhere served as a haven for Rebel refugees from Sullust. In 5 ABY the dark Jedi Jerec conquered Ruusan, siphoning the Force energies of the Valley of the Jedi to augment his power. New Republic agent Kyle Katarn killed Jerec and freed the spirits long trapped by the thought bomb. The Valley of the Jedi is still a Force nexus and a place of pilgrimage for the new Jedi Order.
