Description

Rhen Var is frozen in ice, but evidence suggests it wasn't always so cold. Temples with open courtyards and the lighthouses and docks found in ice-locked harbors attest to a temperate past, though no one can remember when the climate was anything other than subzero.

Located in the Thrantin Worlds, Rhen Var has traditionally been overlooked for colonization due to its bitter climate. The fallen Jedi Ulic Qel-Droma fled to Rhen Var in 3986 BBY, finding some measure of consolation in the snowy wastes as he struggled to redeem his spirit for his part in the Great Sith War. After an offworlder murdered him, Ulic received a hero’s burial inside an ornate stone tomb.

Prior to the Clone Wars, the Republic set up a small supply base and listening outpost on Rhen Var. During the war’s first months in 22 BBY, Separatist forces overran the Republic defenders, claiming the barren planet for unknown reasons. It soon became clear that Count Dooku intended to strip knowledge from the tomb of Ulic Qel-Droma, where the Jedi’s spirit could provide clues to the whereabouts of the ancient Dark Reaper superweapon. Anakin Skywalker helped organize a follow-up mission to Rhen Var, this time smashing the Separatist occupiers but arriving too late to prevent Dooku’s head start on the Dark Reaper.

During the Galactic Civil War, Rhen Var became a battlefield again, this time between the Empire and Rebellion. A team of Rebels attacked and overran a quiet Imperial monitoring station, but they were able to hold their prize for only a few days until the Imperial Army arrived in force. The counterattack destroyed the monitoring station and wiped out all civilized presence on Rhen Var.
