Description
The Jedi world of Ossus is the planet most closely associated with that ancient Order. Though the Jedi tradition is believed to have originated on Tython in the Deep Core, proto-Jedi Knights had already established a learning center on Ossus when Republic scouts first ventured up the Perlemian circa 25,000 BBY. The line running from Coruscant to Ossus defined the shape of the early Republic, and the Jedi defended the growing Core civilization from the Hutts, the Tionese, and other Rimward threats.
Ossus has always been a curiosity. Tucked among the stars of the Cron Cluster, the planet orbits the twin Adegan stars in a highly unusual figure-eight orbit. Its surface, originally overgrown with evergreens and massive, moss-slicked rocky slabs, nurtured the Jedi Order with a sophereic rich in the Force. The Jedi constructed lasting facilities, including the Knossa spaceport—where crystal-topped obelisks focused the light of the twin moons in a dazzling display—and the repository of scrolls, holocrons, and antique lightsabers known as the Great Jedi Library.
The end of Ossus’s golden age came in 3996 BBY, when Sith forces triggered the explosion of the Cron Cluster. The supernova shock wave wiped the planet’s surface clean; only a few Jedi families sheltered beneath the Eocho Mountains survived the extinction-level event. The Jedi Order relocated to Coruscant, and Ossus slowly crept back to life over thousands of years. The descendants of the bunker-dwellers became the tribalistic Ysanna, and the Cron Cluster became the Cron Drift—its creeping hyperspace shadow making passage to the world nearly impossible.
Luke Skywalker made contact with the Ysanna in 10 ABY, discovering many lost treasures to help him in his quest to rebuild the Jedi Order. Following the Yuuzhan Vong War, Skywalker reestablished Ossus as a center of Jedi learning. The planet grew in importance over the next century as the testing ground for the Ossus Project, a terraforming program intended to revive worlds devastated during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion.
History
Ossus was the site of one of the oldest and most prominent Jedi academies. However, the Sith caused a supernova in the nearby Cron Cluster in 3996 BBY, devastating the planet and forcing the Jedi to evacuate. Over the centuries, the survivors developed into the Ysanna tribe, who retained some rudimentary Force abilities. Luke Skywalker rediscovered Ossus and the Ysanna in 10 ABY and began efforts to reestablish the Jedi Academy there. After the Yuuzhan Vong War, Ossus became a focal point for the rebuilding of the Jedi Order and served as a critical location for the Ossus Project, which aimed to terraform and restore devastated worlds.
