Description
Onderon is a wild world, feared for its jungles and the savage, toothy beasts that nest there. Its inhabitants have a similarly alarming reputation. For most Core Worlders, a single look at the walled city of Iziz is sufficient evidence for them to dismiss the Onderonians as barbarians.
The planet's pervasive tangle of greenery is haunted by a stunning array of alpha predators, many of which can also be found on the orbiting "demon moon" of Dxun. Bomas, canocks, and mighty zakeggs prowl the dark thickets, while leathery-winged skreevs and drexls wheel through the skies.
Sometime between 5200 and 4600 BBY humans arrived on Onderon aboard an unknown colony ship. The monsters that howled in the jungle couldn't be shut fast enough, and their numbers grew larger every year when Dxun passed close enough to create an atmosphere bridge connecting moon and planet. The harried colonists survived by banding together, expanding the size of their first encampment over the centuries into the colossal fortification of Iziz. Criminals who defied the law of Iziz found themselves cast into the untamed wilderness. Those who could tame the creatures established a renegade society of beast-riders.
In 4400 BBY Sith disciple Freedon Nadd came to Onderon and made himself a king, infecting the royal lineage with his dark side teachings. His followers, the Naddists, helped trigger succession wars in 4000 and 3998 BBY, while numerous hopefuls attempted to steal the corpse of Nadd's tomb on Dxun. The Mandalorians attacked Onderon during the Sith War, and fifty years later the Sith Civil War saw Onderon swept up in infighting between Queen Talia's loyalists and a rogue faction answering to General Vaklu.
Iziz is still the only large settlement on Onderon, though its current footprint covers a good chunk of a continent. Onderon's wildlife declined in recent centuries due to overhunting (and an outbreak of mange), and it is now safe to venture outside of Iziz's walls and into the cleared plains. There the Unifria religion has created a string of holy shrines that attract offworld visitors, but pilgrims are warned not to penetrate the tree line. It is still considered a quick way to get eaten.
