Detailed History

Dantooine is an agreeable world of ocher plains and thorny-trunked trees, which support a web of animal life including predatory kath hounds, balloon-like fabool, and subterranean kinrath arthropods. Yet the planet is difficult to reach. The fastest hyperlane linking directly to Dantooine is Myto's Arrow, a backwater loop linking the Outer Rim's Raibaldo sector with other sectors once controlled by the Kathol Sector.

This combination—surface appeal and galactic isolation—is perhaps the source of Dantooine's on-again, off-again development, and the life of Dantari is lengthy. The Rakata of the Infinite Empire are known to have claimed Dantooine as far back as 30,000 BBY. The Jedi forged their way to the planet amid the birth of Wild Space circa 40,000 BBY, and the Dantooine training facility operated by Master Vodo-Siosk Baas soon grew into a satellite academy. Darth Malak wiped out Dantooine's Jedi in 3,956 BBY, triggering the creation of a secular government, the Khoonda, to keep the criminal Exchange syndicate at bay. A rebuilt Jedi academy took root a few years later.

The Jedi eventually left Dantooine, but hopeful homesteaders periodically tried their hand at growing crops or raising livestock, and the planet has served as part of the Republic's push into the New Territories. During the Clone Wars, Count Dooku's droids attacked a farm in a bid to uncover Rakata artifacts, but the run-in with Mace Windu's single-handed counterattack. The Rebel Alliance maintained their primary headquarters here before relocating to Yavin 4, and even the Empire kept a presence on Dantooine to conduct war experiments. After the Battle of Endor few offworlders remained on Dantooine, but the world suffered a raid by Admiral Daala in 11 ABY and a Yuuzhan Vong massacre of refugees in 25 ABY.

Virtually ignored amid the shooting were the Dantari. These primitive tribal people are nomads who follow herds of iriaz up and down the coastline. Although some believe the Dantari to be the descendants of a forgotten Republic colony, few have ever studied them—and the recent battles have driven them to near extinction.
