Description

Bacta is big business, and its manufacture and export revolve solely around Thyferra. This jungle world is the only place where the ingredients of bacta are produced naturally, and its insectile natives are the only ones who know its secrets.

Situated in the Inner Rim along the Rimma Trade Route, Thyferra didn't rise to galactic prominence until a century before the Great Sith War, when the restorative properties of bacta became widely known. By mixing the plant alazhi with the chemical kavam, the native Vratix could produce a translucent ooze that promoted rapid cellular regeneration. Soon, human-run corporations moved in to monetize bacta distribution and compete with the medical standard of kolto. The two dominant players—Xucphra and Zaltin—became known as the Bacta Cartel.

The Vratix tolerated the relationship, preferring to work the kavam fields from their saliva-and-mud villages high in the tops of giant trees. Most of Thyferra escaped rampant development, with the bacta-processing facilities built underground and the presence of only three spaceports, of which the capital Zaltrex City is the largest.

Yet some Vratix felt they had lost control of their destiny. A revolutionary group known as the Ashern Circle (or Black Claw) helped orchestrate the quiet coup of 32 BBY that ceded governmental control to the Vratix. This event—made possible by the revelation that Xucphra had sabotaged the bacta supply for the Great Hyperspace War—ushered in a decade of freewheeling trade known as Alazhixazha, or the Thriving Season.

In 27 BBY the Clone Wars provided an opportunity for Xucphra and Zaltin to again seize control of Thyferra, a position they held until 7 ABY, when Ysanne Isard became Thyferra's Head of State with Xucphra's backing. The plots of Rogue Squadron broke Isard's hold, simultaneously diminishing Xucphra's and Zaltin's dominance. The liberated planet became a member of the New Republic. The insectoid pull of Thyferra's natives backfired during the Swarm War of 36 ABY, when large groups of Vratix became Joiners in the hive-mind of the Killiks and temporarily ground bacta production to a halt.
