Description
As its name indicates, Ord Mantell is one of countless Ordnance/Regional Depots used as outposts during the middle period of Republic expansion. Its population is clustered on the arid equatorial continents amid low mesas and flat plains. Coastal cities, including the capital Worlport, are glittering baubles that entice visitors to drop their money at casino tables. The urban outskirts are far less glamorous, with junkyards that stretch for hundreds of kilometers into arid savannas.
The planet is home to one semi-sentient native species, savrips, which have been made famous as a piece used in dejarik holo-chess. Ord Mantell's non-native population comprises many species, mixing with Rodians, Rybet, Devaronians, Arconans, humans, and a thousand other species intermingling, and no group numbering more than 5 percent of the population. Among the many attractions that draw offworlders is the Blockade Runners' Derby, an annual race through the comet cloud at the periphery of the star system.
When the Republic first established the O/RD concept (circa 12,000 BBY) during the Pius Dea Crusades, Ord Mantell sat isolated in the Wild Space of the northern quadrant, reachable only via a tortuous network of frontier trails. After 3700 BBY it became a trading hub for bold traders striking out west from the Hydian Way. Smugglers and black marketeers took root, fostering a lawlessness that tinges Ord Mantell's culture to this day. In pushing for colonization of the New Territories, the Republic spent considerable credits trying to build worlds such as Cassander, Nentan, and Ketaris into trading rivals, but its efforts only seemed to increase Ord Mantell's prominence in the new region.
Due to its history, Ord Mantell is the capital of the Bright Jewel sector. Highly placed government officials in Worlport enjoy bribes and kickbacks that ensure they turn a blind eye to the planet's illicit goings-on. During the reign of the Emperor, the Bright Jewel sector became the hub of the Bright Jewel Oversector, a vast swath of territory extending all the way to Yavin.
Ord Mantell's anything-goes attitude gives it the appearance of neutrality. Few battles have ever been fought in its orbit or on its soil. Notable exceptions include a raid by Grand Admiral Thrawn (who intended the strike merely as a distraction from moves elsewhere) and an attack by the Yuuzhan Vong. The latter assault destroyed much of Ord Mantell's new orbital station, the Jubilee Wheel, but the planet quickly rebounded. It continues to thrive, for its residents believe that strife creates opportunity.
