Description
Rishi is a member of an expansive but utterly overlooked club—worlds that are used only for navigation calibration and never receive groundside visitors.
Of all such planets, Rishi is particularly notable. Its system has long served as the jumping-off point for hyperspace transit to the Rishi Maze satellite galaxy. A jump from Rishi, straight up and perpendicular to the galactic plane, allows travelers to traverse the Zareca String—a line of fringe systems suspended in the space between the two galaxies that are used for restocking, refueling, and navigation. The beginning of the String in the Rishi system is marked only by an automated hyperspace beacon (and, at various points throughout history, a small trading station or a supply scout).
Rishi is overlooked compared with its neighbors in the Abrion sector, but those who live there prefer it that way. The world’s terrain is an undulating trade-off between high, wind-scoured peaks and low, swampy valleys. One intelligent species evolved here, the feathered Rishii, who make their aeries high on the cliffs and lead simple lives as hunters.
In 160 BBY an endless wave of colonists came to Rishi in the form of religious refugees from Galand. These new arrivals also preferred isolation, taking up residence in the sweltering lowlands and ignoring the Rishii entirely. The settlers, who belonged to the strict H’tig sect, set forth dour edicts governing eating, grooming, and the use of repulsorlift vehicles.
By the time of the Battle of Endor, the H’tig believers had choked many of the mountain valleys with their unadorned, white-stoned buildings, supporting a non-native population of two billion employed primarily as miners or fuel processors. Rishi’s low profile, as well as close-in cover offered by the overpopulated cities, prompted smuggling kingpin Talon Karrde to establish a safehouse there.
